Why Churches Should Ditch Projectors and Bring Back Hymnals

Over at The Federalist, this article appeared the other day. The author makes many good points about what is valuable about a hymnal and what is deficient about singing music projected upon a screen.

For me, this is not a new position. Twenty years ago I recall reading in Marva Dawn’s book, Reaching Out Without Dumbing Down, the necessity of going slow when introducing technology into the worship service. Her point was very simple: Before introducing a projector and screen, or any other piece of technology one should ask, “What problem will this solve?” Far too often churches do not slow down and think about the implications of introducing technology into the worship service. And sadly, once the equipment is purchased and installed, it is practically impossible to reverse course.
